Cant get into programming mode
Hi
I bought a livebox on ebay and it seems to work ok (I can login to the box using the browser in normal mode)
However, the repair utility times out every time. I have tried disabling the firewall and antivirus and disconecting the primary ethernet port from my main router, but with no success.
I get the three leds ok, and then the repair utility counts down, By the time it reaches zero, the leds have gone to a single flashing one and sometimes several leds flashing.
I am using win7 not sure if this has any bearing. Not much else availabe with windows here
Many thanks for any clues
Alan
Just to check, have you already managed to replaced the bootloader or are you simply trying to downgrade your system to the correct stock firmware version before 'hacking' it?
I had the same issue when I flashed my system, tried several things, several times...tried quite a few things actually, got a bit lost, went back over the instructions and then suddenly it just worked. I must have missed something first time round.
You have to 'hack' into the system before you can use the rgrepair utility. This requires loading the correct 'stock' version, hacking it & replacing the bootloader then loading in the new HAH firmware.
Please provide a list of what you have done so far to help in diagnosis.
hmm. OK, if you're downgrading, why not use the firmware function in the webgui?
JFYI, I flashed mine from Win7 (Ultimate) laptop.
... that the downgrade hasn't worked? From your description, it looks like it might have.
Do check the version on your Livebox web UI.
Derek
Think it's in Advanced/Firmware or Admin
(Memory of that UI is already fading)
That's correct and I'm sorry, I may have misled you.
If there's no firmware in the UI, it's more than likely automatic...I think Brett/Derek write about what happens in that process, in the wiki.
Have you tried manually setting the IP address on your PC?
I think this may be the issue...when you go into programming mode, the dhcp may not provide your PC with IP in time.
set it to IP: 192.168.1.2, Netmask: 255.255.255.0, Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Hi Alan,
Yes, at a certain point, the countdown stops and the app displays something like "Programming" or something similar.
Then it shows the progress. Just to check, make sure you keep the firewall off and that you are on a trusted network in Win7 i.e. home network...you may need to wait for windows to prompt you for what type of network you have connected to. This opens up a lot of networking functions.
Also if you are on a laptop, make sure the lan is set as the highest priority transport or disable your wifi momentarily.
You can find this setting in Adapter Settings\Advanced\Advanced Settings
Make sure lan adapter is position at top.
Hi Alan,
Could you try another thing for me.
follow the instructions that explain about getting console access:
http://www.dbzoo.com/livebox/commandlineaccess#console_access_hardware
Change the ip of the livebox to 10.0.0.1, disable the dhcp etc,
then set your pc/laptop to 10.0.0.2, 255.255.255.0 etc as per above instructions and then try the reprogramming thing again. Don't go past step 3 of the above instructions...
Let me know how that goes...
Sometimes it difficult to know what is going on by just watching the flashy lights, this is why when we where developing the HAH firmware we ended up building an adapter so we could see what was going on. When I'm doing kernel updates and the whole things locks up this is really useful for debugging.
Depending on how tech savvy you are, you could configure up a Linux Virtual machine running in Virtual Box and use a TFTPD server. There are notes on the wiki on how to setup the TFTPD side of things.
Personally I find linux (CentOS) much easier than using windows, as you can see when a "firmware reflash" request comes in by doing a tail of /var/log/messages.
However if you are getting the 3 lights then the Firmware re-flash process has started on the livebox, whether anything is being served from windows this is a hard question to answer as there is little feedback the RGWREPAIR utility provides. The countdown is just an arbitary GUI update it doesn't mean data is actually being transfered. AFAIK.
Well done!, was beginning to run out of ideas myself.
I know I had the same issue at the begining, I think the breakthrough I had was when a pop-up asked whether I wanted to approve the app. I remember selecting all the check boxes(even though I run a windows domain here, and there was an option for that).
Anyway glad you're on your way...makes sure you follow the rest of the instructions to the letter...don't step over anything. It's not that complicated, just a bit picky...
To run the update utility on Windows 7, you must be Adminstrator. So, right click over RGWRepair and run as Admin. Then should work.
.. just been through this myself!

I know this is very late in the day to add to this post, but I had the same problems reported with Windows 7 and getting the RGWRepair to run.
I couldn't get it to work at all, even as running as administrator.
The same program under Windows XP worked immediately.

I have bought a second Livebox from Ebay, but I am having no success trying to downgrade using the recovery excutable file.
Neither am I able to reach the livebox when connected to it via ethernet at 192.168.1.1
I have tried factory resetting it as described here:
http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/232435
And the lights do seem to proceed as indicated, eventually reaching the point where the wireless light remains on and the @ light is flashing.
I then perfrom the reflash recovery procedure, but am never able to get into programmnig mode, just as the original poster describes.
I'm using a non-wireless XP laptop to do the procedure, and I have reflashed a livebox previously.
I'm about to try the Linux Virtual Box approach mentioned, but suspect this may be bayond me!
Any other fault finding tips gratefully received.
I suspect the box may be duff, but don't have any way to check this.
About one in twenty of the Liveboxes that I've tried to reflash didn't work. Most common fault would be rebooting a couple of seconds after the programming mode was entered. Probably some hardware issue.
If you can't get to the default Orange web UI, the only real way to find out what is going on is to use a console cable ...
http://www.homeautomationhub.com/content/livebox-serial-console-adapter ... this lets you see the debug info that is pumped out as the Busybox starts up.
However, for the price of a console cable you could easily just keep the power supply as a spare, ditch the box and buy another.
Derek.
Well, I've never tried the rgwrepair.exe utility on Windoze7. XP is my main platform for this. That said, I don't see any reason why it might not 'just work'.
Be sure to have your PC disconnected from any other network (and freshly rebooted) when using the repair tool.
Ensure that you have an ethernet cable (not crossover) between the PC and the Livebox 'yellow' socket.
Follow the instructions on the rgwrepair UI carefully, it's important that that you hold in the button until instructed to release it.
I've used this process successfully on >20 Liveboxes, so am pretty sure that it works well. Do give us feedback re how you get on.
Derek.
