Hi, I've been following the forum for a few days now and have a few dumb questions to get started.

1. Which versions of the livebox can actually be used? I know one of the comments from last year talked about V1.1. Is this the only version or can any be used? None of the eBay buyers talk about version numbers and it's not clear to me how they could tell. Is there a part no on the bottom or something?

2. My assumption is to control wireless mains sockets that you need a livebox, the HAH parts bundle and a couple of RF mains sockets. Is anything else needed? (brain and soldering iron excepted)

3. My intention is to do simple things at first, one is to control my VMWare server and broadband connection when they occasionally crash requiring a full power reset. This always happens when I'm abroad and have no access to the physical device. I'd expect to put a simple RF controller next to the server. I also want to control lighting as well.

The ultimate goal would be to get the central heating working with more finesses than at the moment as well as the home security system.

Any help and suggestions welcomed, All the best, Rob

Getting started

All questions are good.

Re 1. Here is a picture of the labels on the two most popular types of Livebox that work with the HAH. Model: DV4210-WU is what to look for

Re 2. Pretty much that. If you want to get a longer range of RF operation you might want to consider an external antenna.

Re 3. Lots of folks use the HAH for remote cycling of equipment. some people wire a relay across the server 'reset' switch ... this is a bit less brutal than just killing the power. That said, cycling the power is sometimes all that will work. The HAH also implements WoL, so you can save power by keeping any 'normally unused' servers in standby mode.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.Sent

Thanks for the reply.

Sent this from iPad and so had to use the simple input fields, didn't't realise that it looks like all the line ends have gone, will edit it for mar matting,

I'll ask the sellers on eBay for some model information.

Well aware of the brutal nature of power cycling servers, as you say sometime that's the only way to kick them back into life. I'll order the right kits and see how it all works out, Best wishes, Rob

question

If your broadband is down how will you get to the HAH to reboot it?

xap-sms to the rescue

You would have to be pretty unlucky to lose both broadband AND mobile coverage that the same time.

7110s a plenty ;-)

I recall having a box in the basement containing a dozen of these old phones. Nice units as you can leave them powered via mains at the same time as having the data cable attached.

Do you need a Nokia 7110

Do you need a Nokia 7110 specifically or can any Nokia phone do? I have a drawer full of Nokia phones (but no 7110) as my t'other half used to work for them.

Thanks,

Rob.

Nokia 7110

Is all that I've ever tried. However, any phone that uses the same 'AT+' command set that the 7110 uses should be good.

Grab a DLR-3 cable & give it a try.

Cheers,
Derek.
