There is a nice interaction diagram on the twitter wiki page that shows how a message traverse through the system.
When testing you don't need to use twitter you can simulate the incoming message using the xAPViewer, this would be the first step. To isolate your problem to one location, in this case the alias applet which you believe has the issue.
The wiki page also shows what a well-formed "class=alias" payload would look like that is processed by aliasApplet.lua
The default applet supplied in /etc_ro_fs/plugboard/samples will process a "relay 1 on" message if you want to go back to scratch and prove to yourself you understand the messages, flow and how things get processed.
